Ideal resolution for 980?

So I'm thinking my next upgrade is going to be a monitor, been very happy with my 24" Dell 1200p from day one, probably because it was my first quality monitor.

Anyway, what would be the best res to go for on a single 980? I don't play FPS and I don't care about 60+FPS, Vsync makes for a great gaming experience IMO for what I play. I think I'd like to stick with IPS so what options have I got? Budget wise isn't set in stone, I'd make that decision when I see what I have to choose from.

I'm a general user, monitor is my main screen so not only for gaming/web browsing but films etc as well.

On an 34" super wide I do have to turn the settings on BF4 down a tiny bit to keep it smooth how I like it (ultra settings and maxed out is what I set and forget at 1080P monitor) but I guess it all boils down to which game.

I do have GTAV and could run the benchmark.

There's no such thing as an ideal resolution.
It depends purely on the era of the game you are playing, and the graphics settings.

I can guarantee you right now, you try 2560x1440 in something reasonably new like Battlefield 4, Far Cry 4, sleeping dogs or any reasonably modern game and you run it with 8x Supersampling RGAA and you won't be pushing 30 FPS in that game :)

So it all depends on the game and your expectations.
 
Stay at 1200p. People talk about 1440p but don't understand that more than a handful of games will NOT run at 60fps maxed with anything less than a 980 ti and EVEN THEN you won't always max games. And I'm talking about games today not in a year or two, because then it will be even worse, e.g. Witcher 3, Far Cry 4, BF4, GTA V, Thief, DA:Inq, etc etc

Hmm i kind of disagree with this, in fact the majority of games I've played (many from your list) stay above 60fps at 1440P , all max details as well.

Don't want to come across rude but im sorry i own a 980TI and a 1440P monitor and the witcher/Crysis 3/BF4 all run above 60FPS. Crysis has reduced AA.

Benchmarks are great but in reality there just numbers on a screen and my results has exceeded anything i pre read on the interweb.
 
I'm talking about the 980 results since that's what this topic is about. But even the 980ti misses in a few, and no, your 'feeling' that it doesn't isn't a counter to the reality of numbers and multiple reviewers contradicting your claims. But like I said, people can feel free to disagree with the facts.

980 totally different ball game. The 980TI however performs amazing at 1440P and for me stays above 60FPS. I am yet to try GTA V, im told this is a tough game to run, Would be good to see though, especially at 4K

I have one 980ti overclocked to 1450mhz and at 2560x1080 the Witcher 3 maxed out runs at 60 fps but drops to 40-50 at times. You have SLI, unless your signature is inaccurate, so 60fps at 1440p isn't going to be a problem.

Similar situation for me with GTA5 as well, drops into the 40's and 50's frequently when there's lots of foliage. This is paired with a 4690k at 4.5GHz

Unless you have Gsync, you will be turning the settings down to keep 60fps on a 980 at 1440p, 1080p will run well on 980. But you could get 1440p and upgrade your card next year. The 980 is not great above 1080p, changing from an OC 970 to a 980ti it was extremely obvious how much difference the bigger memory bus etc. makes at 1440p, not so much at 1080p. Don't expect the 980 to run max settings 1440p without dropping below 60fps, turn a few settings down and it will be decent, but I was not happy with an OC 970 at 1440p it was very slow compared to 1080p, the OC 980ti however is faster at 1440p than the OC 970 was at 1080p.

i got on fine with a 290 at 1400p so i cant see a 980 having too many problems, im using 980 sli at the mo for 3440x1440 but i only bought two because i got them at a good price
