Ideal size TV for console gaming

that'll be because the desktop will always look rubbish when running a non-native resolution. Plasma's not being as sharp as lcd's is a myth which ive disproved once before here.

one of those task bars is captured (by photo) on my sony 16.4" laptop @ 1600x900, the other on a 50" panasonic 50pz80 @ 1080p. I'll let you decide which is which, because believe me they are both pin sharp.

The top one looks better to me. There seems to be a yellow tint in the bottom one.

depends on your viewing distance but id imagine minimum for bedroom - 26' and minimum for living room 32'

I'm sat about 5 and a 1/2 feet away from the TV and it's a 32'. Seems to be fine for the distance. If I was sat in the living room about 9 or 10 feet away though I'd probably want something like a 48'.

Currently use a 32" 720p (well 1360x768) LCD in the bedroom and depending on mood/game sit between 2.5' to 7' away (actionny based MP games are up close whereas RPGs/SP games play from in bed).

Ideally looking to get a 42"-47" LCD or a 50" plasma for the living room - sitting about 6' away (might be a bit big havn't checked ;)) - was toying with a PJ, but just had walls knocked down a windows fitted to increase the light downstairs so not the best move heh.

Using a 32" for my media room, sitting about 5 - 7 feet away depending on how I'm sitting on the sofa. Personally I find it perfect, it's not too big and not too small. Had a 37" model in the room and it was too big.

I am sure I have read that the ideal distance between you and the TV should be 2.5 times the size of the screen. So for a 40 incher about 120 inches away or 10 foot in new money!

According to a site for 7' viewing distance for THX standard viewing you need a 62"+ not sure how good the calc is just googled it..

Also says the maximum viewing distance (1080HD source) on a 50" is 6.5', again no idea how legit these figures are ;)

Also seems the SMPTE recommend a viewing distance of 1.9xscreen size, and THX certification state that the backrow should be no more than 2.2x and the front row should ideally be 1.54x screen. Thats for HD content, and SD you need 3x as a minimum and 5x as a max however 5x for HD material looses it's detail.

I sit between 2.5m and 3m away from my TV. It's a 40" LCD. I'd say it's a pretty good size, though I wouldn't complain if it was bigger!

60 inches of calibrated plasma goodness here (sit 3ms away).

I'm planning a projector for the new house too :D

80" at about 8 foot is about perfect for me, could maybe be a touch bigger :D

Before that I had a 37" lcd at the same distance, could play it in bed had to sit in chair a few feet away.

Just get the biggest you are willing to spend out on as there is no definitive size. But if you see a bigger one chances are you will want it but that feeling passes if you let it and don't start feeling inadequate. :p

I have a 32" and its great - massive compared to old CRT I had previously!

Depends what you are used to. I spent christmas at gfs parents who had PS3 on 42" so when got home TV did seem small but that only lasted a few days till got back used to it. Now TV feels like right size and anything else would be to big.

I currently use a small 19" HDTV for the 360. I have my PS3 plugged into the 42" Plasma downstairs, but find it really hard to perform well in games.

Thinking about getting a 22"-24" PC monitor and just using it for the 360. 19" is getting a tad small, but i do prefer playing on smaller screens.

As big as you can fit in the room without it looking ridiculous :p

50" about 8-10ft away is awesome
