Hi All,

Been reading on the internet recently and in magazines etc looking for what I would consider to be an ideal travel camera.

I am not so sure it exists, wondered what you guys thought. Would love to have a camera with me more often apart from the occasions I arrange to go out on shoots with my DSLR.

Cameras I have looked at so far are -

1. Fuji X100T - Seems well built, aps-c, menus seem easy to navigate

2. Sony Rx1r2 - Seems ideal, well built, good weight to it, small, full frame, not sure on menus, seems very expensive

3. Olympus omd em5 mk2 - Seems well made, small, like the flip out screen, has the option to change lenses which the previous two don't.

I am not sure at this stage in the thinking if I want interchangeable lenses or not. I have this with my dslr of course. One part of me is wondering if I don't have the interchangeable option if this would take away worrying about what lens to take here or there lol, its also a different discipline too, having a fixed lens or using a prime etc, think more, more methodical, zoom with your feet etc.

Anyone any thoughts or been through the same thing? My dslr is a 5dmk3 just for reference.

yep ive had, x100, x-10, sony dsc100mk1 (forget the proper number but i am sure you no what i mean!) and I've had various dslr's including the 5dmk111 and nikon 7200. now just a omd-em10 mk1 and a load of lenses to choose from. small very competent. it works as a serious camera or bung in the pocket point and shoot.

Second the above, however I don't have a an OM series but a pen series (EPL5) of micro four thirds. The choice of lenses is really good especially the pro's if you can fork out for them.

Recently used the 12-40mm pro on holiday on croatia and that stayed on for literally the entire time (24-80mm in FF), can sometimes beat equivalent primes with the obvious ability to cover more focal ranges, only downside not as much DOF but its really not the end of the world!

Thanks all. Do we think there is much in it, say between rx100, x100t or an OMD of some form? Thinking about IQ, low light performance etc......usual concerns I guess

I don't think there's much between the 1" sensor compacts and the m4/3rds sensor at all to be honest. I bought into m4/3 coming from APS-C and even the very latest m4/3rds sensor on the Panasonic GX8 is lacking compared with my older Samsung NX300s APS-C sensor.

ive owned all of those and IQ the x100 and omd win they are better than the smaller sony, but the sony is no slouch. size wise the sony is way smaller than the other two, its tiny.
low light they are all very good but depending which x100 you go for focus lock can be a bit hit and miss.
There is a way round it but it depends on if you are willing to deal with it, you use high contrast edges to lock then recompose. the fuji produces a certain look to the images and i have to say i think the 1st version has the best "fuji look" to the sensor, its almost film like.
omd well, up side small, great stabilization, great IQ for a compact size and amazing amount of lens available, from tiny pancake up to pro f2.8's. for me the omd system wins. but what ever route you go they are all great just with different downsides

Coming back to this thread after a while and I Still haven't got this sorted out yet. x100t/rx1r 1 or 2 / Leica Q would all be great cameras I think.

But I am starting to think about perhaps just adding a Sigma 35 1.4 A or Canon 35L original to my 5d and being done with it.

Has anyone else gone this way and how has it worked out, or have you done something different as I have seen a number of potential travel camera threads posted on this and other forums so it seems this is a fairly common conundrum.

If you can live without a viewfinder the Fuji-x70 is an amazing camera that will fit in your pocket . Or a Richo GR which has a nicer lens than the x-70

I'll add another camera into the mix,

Fuji x70. Same as x100. APSC same as x100, just no evf.

I'm in the same boat, but budget doesn't quite stretch to an rx1r. There may also be a new Fuji x??? Released in the next couple of weeks so here's hoping it an x70 with 4K video and weather sealing!

The only fuji upcoming release is the medium format GFX . Think we will be waiting a long time for anything the size of the x70 with 4k .And if they did i would think the 4k readout would be severely cropped due to the sensor size to stop overheating in such a small body .

Fuji isn't sony and doesn't update its cameras every 6 months .

I have gone the 35mm prime on a 5d body route for lightweight use I opted for the often overlooked canon 35mm f2 IS it is a lovely lens and a lot more compact than the art and L offerings if you can live with it being a bit slower. The IS is also really handy for getting away with really low shutter speeds at dusk and the like.

The annoying thing is they put the wrong lens on the x70 it would be top of my list if they had put a 35mm on it instead of the 28mm!

I was using the Rx100m2 decent camera, but the zoom on it stopped working, attempted to fix it myself and now it's in a pile of pieces in my cupboard (I had a damaged flexcable and I can't find spare ones online).

Have you contacted sony to see if they will sell you one? Most companies will sell spare parts.
