Hi,

I/we would appreciate some help with regards to building a pc please:):)

My son has managed to save £747. We'd like to build it (first timers:D) and we don't need a monitor as we have a Dell 23in S2309W.

I use a Powermac G5 and my knowledge of PC's is limited;) , but saying that we would like to go for an Intel chip and an ATI 4870 or 4850.

We would also like to attempt overclocking:D:D, so hopefully you can take that into consideration also.

Looking forward to hearing your knowledable thoughts, with thanks,

Stoutmeister:)and Son:)

Oh, sorry I forgot that. We have an OS from our dead laptop. The keyboard and mouse I'll get that for him seperately:)

Also, we'd like to gor for the Antec 300 (better air circulation/more room?). Games to run on it COD series, Battle of Britain, World in Conflict etc. apps would be Photo and video editing.

Sorry for the slip-up.

OK !

The XP cd, I had no idea that was the case of it being unusable:eek::eek: I'd rather keep all the money available for the rig itself... If I read correctly on a different post, we can download Windows 7 and use that for the time being ? In a month or two the pressure will be off and we can buy a new copy of XP or vista:cool:

I think we'll go for the Quad Core option, especially as MS Word is such an resource hog (you learn somthing new every day, maybe a ram upgrade would be good too ???):p

Two of the kind suggestions mention an extra case fan, is this essential as I thought the two on the case would have been ample ?

Thanks again,

Stoutmeister

Nearly there, just one problem though:

The cooler mentioned to go with the Intel Quad Core is sold out:( Can anyone recommend a replacement please ?

I've omitted the disk drive, but I'll get that locally:)

I use 4 fans but thats because i store mine in a cabinet and also its on 4-6 hours a day, really its handy but not important, my build above showed 2 extra 120mm to have to add if you want, i would personally but upto you,

Als my rig showed a few little bits like the cpu cooler and 160gb for the operating system and tb for storage which make it a nice pc, upto you at the end of the day bt i wouldnt spend the extra money on a 320gb for the operating system when tbh everything should be stored in the tb if set up correctly.

Do you mean by creating a partition on the drive ? I have done this on my Mac and found it easy enough:) On a PC I presume the process would be near identical:cool::confused:

Anyone care to recommend a CPU cooler, I googled the above mentioned Kentstown and cooler but none were recommended...are they quad or dual specific ? Sorry for the questions, please remember I'm a pc noob and this will be my 12yr olds and mine first build:)

Thank You All !!!!!

Thank you Ben M, reflux,Kennysevenfold, Mathewhotdude, Rawkus, shr3k, icey_haj, and Ducky Spud.:):):)

I've placed the final order:

Gigabyte ATI Radeon HD 4870 1024MB

Intel Core 2 Quad Pro Q6700 "LGA775 Kentsfield" 2.66GHz

Asus P5Q Intel P45 (Socket 775)

Samsung SpinPoint F1 1TB SATA-II

PC Power & Cooling Silencer 610

Antec 300 Three Hundred

Noctua NH-U12P CPU Cooler (Socket AM2/LGA775)

Kingston HyperX 4GB (2 X 2GB)

Arctic Silver 5 Thermal Compound

This came to the princely sum of £759.96 inc p&p to Ireland

Thanks for the great help, and now I have Borat on my side:D:D:D

I certainly will Gentlemen, with photos too:D

It's due to arrive Tuesday 15th, (due to Easter Holidays), no doubt I'll be asking more questions of you with regards to assembly;)

Heh, Heh !!!

Alright already, I'm reading, I'm reading:D:D Understanding it is the problem though;). I've oc'd the card on my Mac X800XT (don't laugh, it cost as much as the 4870..second hand:eek::mad::eek:). That was done via the ATI software, nice and easy:).

Overclocking the chip is going to be a whole new experience:eek::eek::eek::)
