Ive been doing a lot of research, and this is what ive come up with so far. Opinions and ideas would be appreciated! I Have a budget of about £800 and would like to make it stretch as far as possible! I Already have hard drives, monitors, DVD drives etc so the following is all i need:

Intel Core 2 DUO E6600 "LGA775 Conroe" 2.40GHz (1066FSB) - OEM - £209.14

DFI Infinity 975X (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard - £96.34

Connect3D ATI Radeon X1950 XT 256MB GDDR3 HDTV/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail -£164.49

GeIL 2GB (2x1GB) PC5300 667MHz Value DDR2 Dual Channel Kit (GX22GB5300DC) - £129.99

Antec Nine Hundred Ultimate Gaming case - £75.19

Tagan TG430-U15 430W ATX2.01 Easycon SLi Compliant Modular Silent PSU - £55.21

Total: £753.10 inc VAT

Now, im not sure about the motherboard or Ram, ive heard this graphics card is the best 1 around for under £200. Also not sure if that power supply is enough. However i am pretty sure that i want both the case and Processor.

I Want some that can be overclocked, but doesnt have to be to perform well, so i dont want tip top overlocking motherboards etc, just something that will allow it a bit....

Thx for any help! Feel free to disagree constructivly!

To get a top spec computer you are going to need at least 4 grand.

I suggest dual 748 sli config graphics cards.

and a intel core quad.

Sweet.

I hope that helps.

Erm dont really see how thats helpful. Dont know what the first thing is. And isnt a quad core like 500+ pounds? Leaving just 300 for everything else?

i havent heard of these before mate:rolleyes:

to me it looks fine except I`d go for a Gigabyte DS3 or DS4 mobo, maybe go for a meatier powersupply atleast 600W just to allow for expansion later... and that case isn't very quiet if your looking for silent running?

You'll also need OS and HSF

Well even though i'm about a week away from posting my own spec me thread i feel as though i've seen enough of these now to guess what the common opinion will be.

Most will probably ask you if the 6600 is really a must and how you'd feel about dropping to a 63/6400 and a decent cpu cooler like an artic seven then clocking the muda. The Tagan seems to get some mixed reviews so you'll probably have someone recomending a corsair/Seasonic/ocz PSU. The DFI i'm not sure about but people love the DS3/4 and P5B boards so budget pending look into those, i think the last thing people will pick at is the case since its basically a stock steel case with a few fancy led fans which serve little purpose other than suck a lot of dust into your system in the fastest possible way, 9 out of 10 people here will recomend a lian li pc-7, the other one an Antec p180 or something.

At least i think thats usually how these things go.

Spot on. I had a good look around at the other spec me threads and the replies I had in my own and compiled a list of parts from the combined wisdom (ahem) of the lads an lasses here and ended up £20 over budget but very excitedly waiting for thursday and my new rig to arrive.

I think, as you're trying to get £800 to stretch you as far as possible, you could get better...

E6300 OEM
£110.44

Freezer 7 Pro
£16.44

Gigabyte DS3
£99.86

OcUK DDR2 Value RAM (800Mhz) Use these 4 to get your C2D to 2.8Ghz or maybe even more!*
£146.86

Antec 650w PSU
£88.11

Cheap Case Asus TA-212
£25.84

BFG GeForce 8800 GTS 640MB
£291.39

Total:
£778.94 exc. delivery

So... by getting a cheap case, overclocking an E6300 to 2.8Ghz (or more with a ram divider), opting for value 6400 Ram, you can get yourself a 640mb BFG 8800. And that will be a MEAN gaming machine! :D I dunno if you'd need more case fans, mind you.

EDIT: Also, check the dimensions of that case (or email OcUK and ask them nicely to check for you) to see if an 8800 will fit in it. IMO money spent on cases is better spent on components :)

*obviously I can't guarantee that overclock, but most people seem to get 3Ghz. Using value ram without a ram divider, peronally I wouldn't go over 400FSB and without a divider that's 2.8Ghz max. With a divider then you can get the CPU up higher most likely.

Thankyou for all of your comments! I especially like Furnace's idea.

Just 2 questions. What is a ram divider? And could any1 link me to any good sites where i can learn how to overclock well?

Thanyou!

The BIOS on that DFI isnt the best and the northbridge needs extra cooling. Go with the DS3 :)

1. wait for quad core
That might be a long wait, I can't see any affordable quadcores being pushed out for a good few months. Also, most software available isn't even able to use dualcores to it's full potential. I can't see quads being worthwhile for quiet some time.

2. wait and see what ATI's DX10 offering will be before you buy a new rig
Valid point, but as it stands, the 8800s are great. I presume ATI's cards will be as good, if not better, BUT they will be more expensive. That could be an problem for the budget.
