Ideas for new CPU cooler?

Most people who buy the megahalems use the fans you linked but have them in push/pull configuration so that's £28 just in fans granted you don't have to buy new thermal paste but that would still bring the whole package in at about £71 (£7 for thermal paste hence why I quoted £80) but even at £57 it's still getting expensive. Granted it’s great at what it does and if you want an air cooler and the lowest temps I would most likely get this setup but in terms of value for money and cost/performance…………..?

You have a point - most people who go for the megahalems do run it with two fans. However, this usually because they are buying top-end systems with top-end air cooling (ie megahalems/TRUE) and don't really mind shelling out £12 extra quid for another fan (which will only give them a 1-2 degree drop compared to one fan).

Running the megahalems with a single fan still provides excellent cooling and low noise (it is designed with wide fin spacing to make maximum use of a single low speed fan). So if you can afford the £57 - then you get a great cooling solution and one of the best CPU cooler mounting systems I have ever used.

In terms of value for money the intel stock cooler is the best because it costs no (extra) money and provides sufficient cooling for a s775 chip. If you also assess cheap aftermarket air cooling, like the Arctic Freezer 7, then it is much better than high-end air cooling as the price is low and the cooling is decent.

However, CPU cooling has always been the king of diminishing returns. If you want the best value then you buy cheap and cheerful (like the AF7 the OP used before), but if you want the best performance you have to pay a premium - that's the way it is.

Also a +1 for the TRUE as suggested above, the performance difference compared to the megahalems is very small and it has always performed excellently.
