me and the GF want to get out of London this w/e and I've also yet to give my new 24-105 L glass lens a proper session.

Unfortunately neither of us drive so it has to be somewhere easyish to get to by train.

Was thinking about Rye or Hastings as I want to go to the sea, but anyone got any better suggestions?

thanks!

I'd recommend Brighton myself. It gets very busy on sunny weekends but as a bonus there is an open top bus that goes from the pier up to devil's dyke.
I think it runs every hour.
You can walk along the downs and have some lunch in a pub up there. Something differet and it saves you bumping along the lanes with everyone else.
Strong recomend . oh and take a kite :)

the GF is from Cambridge so been there tons lately! Also, have been to Brighton a ton as well!

Looking for more village style that bigger town

Not quite sure how that is relevant, if you didn't know where Deal was, you haven't been there surely? And it certainly isn't a larger town.

Try heading further towards the middle of the south coast rather than the south-east?

I would head for Rye like you said but get off the train at a place called Tenterden where you can pick up a steam train (http://www.tenterdentown.co.uk/attractions.html) and go through some fantastic Kent country side to Bodium Castle have a walk around that and then get back on the train head back to Tenteden and on to Rye about 30mins on the train spend the afternoon in rye (Make sure you have a drink in the Hotel right at the top of the hill in Rye Excellent views http://www.rye.org.uk/establishments/ryelodge/rye_lodge.htm) A Lovely way to spend the day. :D
