Ideas for SFF gaming rig?

Hey all,

I am building a small form factor PC which should primarily be used for gaming as well as a bit of 3D work (level design). I actually bought a Shuttle PC, but the vendor had replaced my desired HD 4870 with an 9800 gtx+, just before shipping. He said the two cards were identical in performance, "some even say the 9800 is better" and he couldnt install the 4870 because Shuttle did not have big enough power supplys. Knowing that its ******** (regarding 9800 having same performance as 4870), I have decided to return the Shuttle and build a SFF rig myself instead.

I haven't got a lot of details pegged down yet. It is a long time since I build a PC myself and I have never build a SFF PC. I need the SFF because in my current situation i travel around by plane a lot, and I need some portable PC power for my games, without paying excessively for a high power laptop.

My budget is around 13-1400 british pounds (guess around 2700 dollars) for the PC. This does NOT include monitor, keyboard, mouse etc.

I am going for the SUGO 01 or 02 cabinet, as it fits my requirements dimension wise, and it has gotten good reviews. However, I need to decide on:

-A very good micro atx motherboard (motherboards is what I know the least about), so I have no idea what I should buy in this category.

-A great processor. Not necessarily the I7, but something very fast. Thinking of an intel 2.9 dual core (E8400 or is it E8500). I heard quad core is not really worth it yet related to gaming, as most games perform better on dual core than quad (at least for the time being) - Myth or? I can see some advantes to going with a quad core, as it seems 3D graphics tool benefit a lot from quad core.

-Some good RAM (DDR3 maybe?). I intend to go for 4 GB as I believe that should be enough. Have heard a lot good about Corsair... Any better alternatives?

-A powerfull enough PSU to run the components without hitches. The more silent the better. I expect 700W to be enough?

-A kickass graphics card. It doesn't have to be the newest, most expensive one, though it needs to be at least as powerful as the HD 4870. I am not a fan of dual cards like running Gforce cards in SLI or ATI cards in Crossfire. I think it will be too much heat for such a small cabinet, and also there seems to be a lot of problems running games with such setups. I don't really care if ends up to be an ATI or GFORCE card, just want to make sure that it runs well with the rest of the components.

As for HD, optical drive etc, I have it sorted. Operating system will be Windows XP 32 or 64 bit.

Hope you guys can help me out, especially with regards to the motherboard. Any other ideas would be very welcome as well, in regards to for example minimizing noise levels and heat (as it is a small cabinet), etc.

Thanks on advance!

Well theres no i7 matx mobos as of yet i dont think. I dont think theres that many DDR3 matx mobos about either but may be wrong. If your wanting to run crossfire then your only option is the board in my sig but otherwise maybe not worth the extra but it is one of the best overclocking boards you can buy from reviews but can save money and go with a diff matx board. E8400 clocked to well over 4ghz or Q9450 maybe. A nice PC-8500 DDR2 4Gb kit. Corsair or be quiet powersupply over the 600w mark. Card wise either the 1Gb 4870 or a 216 GX260.

Some advice I have to give, although it upsets me as I have found out the hard way:

- DFI P45-2TRS: Doesn't recognise the .5 multiplier on my Q9550, thus rendering it pointless above a Q9450.

- V350: Nice case but NO room and your HDDs will get really really hot due to the placement and that of the fan.

I dont have any exp either apart from my giga. lol

v350 can have 2 hdd's? 2 1tb hdd's is enough for anyone surely? I ran my samsung f1 without the back fan thing on and it was fine.

and probably one behidn the dvd drive?

cant remember if theres enough room... could easily get a laptop hdd in there ;)

howmuch space do you need! lol

also, edit sweary in op. Save you getting suspended over christmas ;)

Aye flashed the BIOS with the latest version its all fine. CPU speed is reported as 2666 rather than 2830 so I know its wrong, guess I'll just keep an eye out for another BIOS upgrade.

And yes it can take 2 HDDs but a third, maybe if you have a 5.25 --> 3.5" adapter yes.

Incoming long post!

I'm running a pretty high end mATX at the moment, I've got a SG03 which is a great case. Nice and compact.

I've got 2 harddrives in the bottom, both run nice and cool thanks to the positioning of the front 120mm fans. The only downside is something that will effect most mATX setups, the amount of space for a cpu cooler. The SG03 has the same amount of space around the cpu as the SG01/SG02 I think, meaning you can only use a half height cooler under the powersupply.

It is generally regarded the best thing to do here is get a cooler such as the Silverstone NT06 and have it mounted so the fins line up with one of the intake fans to get a bit of airflow, then use a powersupply with a 120mm fan in the bottom to bring the air out.
I've done this in mine although I had to improvise fitting a 120mm fan onto the heatsink itself aswell due to the fan on my powersupply only having a low rpm fan that didn't pull enough air through, I was idling at around 60 with my quadcore.

I've now got a yateloon mounted under the heatsink, blowing through the NT06 and into + out of the powersupply. my CPU is now running at good temps for the compactness. Idling at around 40 degrees at 3GHz (I've not tried to drop the voltage or anything, that's something to do over xmas) On load it goes up to about 60-65.

The main problem will be how hot the powersupply gets, Mine gets very hot to the touch when gaming, I've not had any stability issues with this though, quite the opposite infact, it's my most reliable pc for ages :p
Ideally I'd try and get a psu which has a 80mm exhaust fan on the back just helping to remove the hot air, I'm possibly going to mod my powersuply and fit one of the old low profile AMD64 heatsink fans to do just this. Quiet at low rpm, and will remove enough hot air to do the trick :)

That's wrong, those trusty DFI dudes to the rescue:

Looks ideal for a decent gaming rig in SFF. Juicee!!:)

Incoming long post!

Would it be too much for me to ask you to post a pic of this layout?

I'm about to build a very similar sounding PC for my girlfriend for her uni work and the odd bit of tf2. This will be my first forray into SFF so I don't really know what sort of space limitations I'm likely to come across.

Thanks for any help you can provide.

Anyway, enough of my thread hijacking :D
