Idea's for towing

I am going to change my car as the Toyota Verso we have is woefully slow and rubbish for towing. It's a feeble 1.8 petrol.

I want to get a used, very-capable-for-towing vehicle that can be used normally when not towing (doesn't feel like driving a barn). It will need to easily pull a 2.2 tonne caravan.

Budget is £10-11K. I'm thinking diesel. Manual. Possibly 4x4.

Idea's? Thanks.

Have you been using your Toyota Verso to tow your 2.2 tonne caravan ?

As from looking at some Verso specs they say
Max. Towing Weight - Braked‎: ‎1,300kg

if you are indeed correct and your towing 2.2 ton your looking at rangerovers X5s etc or possibly some of the bigger van derived stuff.

now many cars will tow 2.2ton ie 2l diesel Mondeo estate rated for 1800kg

Wow. Have you really been towing that 2.2T with a Verso?

I'd suggest a Discovery 3 at that budget. Probably not the most reliable thing out there, but still probably the best actual 4x4 in that budget. Should cope quite easily with that towing weight.

Depends when he passed his driving test. Prior to Jan 2007 means he can tow combined MAM of 8.25 tonnes

Irrelevant, with something like a Verso (or most other regular cars, rather than 4x4s and vans etc.) the MAM is unlikely to be anything near what is required.

The license situation just means he could drive a bigger vehicle with a higher MAM, not that he can exceed vehicle limits.

Still irrelevant. Doesn't matter when you passed your test. The towing limit of the towing vehicle is the towing limit.

There was a cut-off date in '97 though, as I only just made that one.

Wouldn't fancy buying that Verso if it's been pulling a 2.2 tonne caravan, I bet it's ripped the nuts out of it.

For something that weight it's gotta be a 4x4 and I would also probably lean towards diesel as it tends how much better torque.

2.2 tonne are you sure? Were looking at the moment and even the largest caravans we've seen are are under 2 tonne laden. Unless its a hobby van like the gypsy's favour but they are almost residential at 8' wide.

You shouldn't really pull any more weight than what your vehicle is even if the stats say it will pull more. If you go by the caravan club recommendations then you should only pull 0.85% of your vehicles weight.

Hmm. I passed my test in Dec' 92. Never used the Verso to tow, not bought a caravan yet.
Don't fancy anything as big as a Discovery. Caravan-wise, i'm thinking 5/6 berth twin axle.

I was going to put forward Toureg as an option but didn't realise quite how expensive they are - a mk2 is out of budget it seems.

It doesn't necessarily need to be 4x4, my truck is 4x2 and pulls 6800lbs. You'll find some cars are considerably higher towing than others, think it's partly down to the structure of the rear end as well as engine/brake combination

I'd be looking at a Skoda superb and a sub 2 tonne caravan. The superb gets rave reviews for towing and paired with the 3.6 engine and 4 wheel drive will be even better

There isn't quite the obsession with towing power in the UK as North America. :p

Unless you're looking for something like a Transit then an SUV/Pickup will probably be needed for the weight, pretty much all of which will be 4x4.

Something like a Mitsubishi L200 may be an option as well, plenty of towing capacity there. The same size as a Landrover though.

Alternatively if the caravan is below 2000kg then you can get some smaller stuff like the CRV or X Trail. There will be plenty in that budget.
