Is this spec ok for a cheap gaming setup? Also is there an AMD chip that anyone recommends instead of an intel as ive heard you get more for your money with AMD chips.

Thanks

Mason

Please don't quote competitor prices.

I would get a bigger psu. Either the 450w fire fly specced or a pc cooling 500w modular (the white ones).

I would get the 3570k if I were you too.

who told you that? Slap them :D

defiantly fork out extra for the 3570k

YOUR BASKET
1 x MSI GeForce GTX 660 OC Twin Frozr 2048MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card £167.99
1 x Gigabyte Z77-D3H Intel Z77 (Socket 1155) DDR3 Motherboard £83.99
1 x Corsair Enthusiast Series TX550M High Performance 550W '80 Plus Bronze' Modular Power Supply (CP-9020001-UK) £59.99
1 x Intel Pentium G850 2.90GHz (Sandybridge) Socket LGA1155 Processor - Retail £50.39
1 x Toshiba (7K1000.D) 500GB SATA 6GB/s 32MB Cache - OEM (DT01ACA050) £47.99
1 x Xigmatek Asgard Pro Gaming Case - Black £32.99
1 x GeIL Black Dragon 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C11 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit (GD38GB1600C11DC) £23.99
1 x LiteOn IHAS124-04 24x DVD±RW SATA ReWriter (Black) - OEM £15.98
Total : £497.40 (includes shipping : £11.75).

The pentium CPU has plenty of poke for the price. Cheap enough that you can justify "writing it off" much later to add say a 2nd hand i5 2500K or even the 3570K and overclock it.

1GB of VRAM is false economy in my eyes. The 660 will add cuda support to assist the CPU in a number of software suites (eg video editing). It's a better card than the 6870, comparion HERE

Modular PSU as well to help keep the insides tidy and airflow at it's best :)

Gets my vote. :)

I agree - never agreed with any of your builds yesterday.

What like THIS thread from yesterday?

It's a very similar spec but I had a bigger budget but also had to pay for an OS........of course some of the prices are now invalid today.

Where was your i5K spec I asked for? As you insisted he should get one ;)

P.S Thanks for the +1's guys :D

The only thing AMD has to offer for your PR at the moment is the Trinity APU's

these have better onboard GPU's than Ivy/sandy but dont have the CPU power of ivy/sandy

if you went down the AMD route you might not even need a dedicated GPU. it all depends on what resoloution you game at and what settings you deem playable, wether your someone who needs ultra settings or can settle for medium. me persoanlly im an ultra settings fan, however my system isnt capable and i dont have the budget ;)

heres a basket to show what AMD can offer you, you can get a 256Gb ssd for an extra £50 but you said you wanted to keep the cost down so i put that one instead.
YOUR BASKET
1 x Gigabyte F2A85X-UP4 AMD A85X Chipset (Socket FM2) DDR3 ATX Motherboard £97.99
1 x AMD A10-5800K Black Edition 3.80GHz (Socket FM2) APU Trinity Quad Core Processor (AD580KWOHJBOX) £91.19
1 x Crucial RealSSD M4 64GB 2.5 SATA 6Gb/s Solid State Hard Drive (CT064M4SSD2) £59.99
1 x Corsair Builder Series CX 500W V2 '80 Plus Bronze' Power Supply (CP-9020047-UK) £49.99
1 x Western Digital Caviar Blue 500GB SATA 6Gb/s 16MB Cache - OEM (WD5000AAKX) £46.99
1 x BitFenix Shinobi USB3.0 Gaming Case - White/Blue £39.98
1 x GeIL Black Dragon 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C11 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit (GD38GB1600C11DC) £23.99
1 x OcUK 22x DVD±RW SATA ReWriter (Black) - OEM £13.99
Total : £439.12 (includes shipping : £12.50).

An Intel build would give you better CPU performance so for someone like me an intel build would be better but it all depends on your needs :)

Also regradless what build you choose, the bitfenix shinobi is on special this week for a decent price and comes in more than one colour scheme if white isnt to your taste so i would recommend that :)

I would use THIS RAM. The Trinity APU will thank you for it.

A10 vs G850

The 660 GPU will murder the AMD APU. It was worth mentioning Trinity though fella to help the OP weigh up the options. THIS shinobi (is a little more) has a window and comes with 2 fans, most of the shinobis only come with one.....the core versions have none.

It was a grammatical joke. Ignore.

yeah i know a 660 will destroy a Trinity, its on my shopping list! hahaha
and hadnt noticed that case! i was still under the impression that the windowed version didnt come with the trims and badges (still doesnt on the white one i bieleve) as that was the thing i noticed when i was case shopping a while ago.
