At the moment I have a q6600 which is unclocked at present due to ram problems: rather than pursuing an outright upgrade in the next 6 months would it be more sensible to water cool the cpu with a Corsair h50-1/ replace/rma the ram and see what I could get through clocking? thanks for any advice ;)

Depends a lot on wether your MB is a good OCer or not. Would be interested in which MB you have and/or which MB is advised by members.

I have a Q6700 project on the go as a little dry run b4 a more full on build.

The H50 seems to be the in toy and does a good job and would be a good buy if you intend to transfer it to a future "big upgrade". Otherwise a good, cheaper, air cooler will be enough to get good results. Just search the overclocking threads.

I suppose what I really should have asked was what kind of clocks could I get using the H50-1 on a ds3r q6600?
