Hi, the good ladys mother asked me to have a squint at her netbook as it wasnt connecting to the wireless network in her house.
I went in and found the hardware was a dlink d615 and the netbook was an acer aspire 1. The other laptops in the house were connecting to this network with no problem at all.
When i booted up the netbook it identified and connected to the correct network no problems, but internet explorer msn messenger and the widgets with news feeds etc were not getting any connectivity. Packets were recieved and sent. Checked firewall settings incase of a lockdown etc but all checked out ok.
Set my phone up as a wireless access point and connected with the netbook and it all worked great so i started looking towards the router. Connected the two together with a cable and accessd the router settings, changed the channel select to auto as it was manually on 11. Both are b/g compatible so what could be at fault? also its win xp. Thanks for any info!

Try setting router as WEP (if its not already). Some netbooks on windows XP have issues connecting to wireless when its using something other than WEP.

Well there was nothing else connected to the network, would there still be a possibility of a conflict with inactive connections? @Deception, sounds good im sure it was on wpa possibly wpa 2?

Hi, again. Went up again today and had a tinker. Changed the settings on the router to wep, and this time the laptop identified the network but just wouldnt connect to it. It would have the window up saying it was trying to connect and then eventually it timed out and i still wasnt connected. Any more ideas?

Try with no security first - if it connects then add security in. Obviously don't leave on no security if that's the only way to connect :)

I had a problem with a net gear where they (net gear) had got the translation of they key wrong. If you have another device you can reenter the settings to check that can connect correctly and are inputting the key the router us expecting.

Be 100% sure you types the key correct, if windows hides it type it into notepad, remember its case sensitive

Reboot the router and the laptop

Might want to delete your network from the wireless networks too, on the laptop. As it might be trying to use WPA details it had stored from previously connecting.

Check there is no static IP configuration on the NIC,
Might be worth manually sticking in the DNS on the network card, try the router IP itself and maybe try OpenDNS if that fails.
