Identify that noise!

Anyone know what this noise that's coming from the engine bay from this Golf 1.9 TDI could be? Seems to be most audible from the alternator area. Belt issue? Something more horrific somewhere else?

You could ditch the belt, run it and see if it goes away (briefly). If it goes then it's one of the pulleys/tensioner or alternator bearing I'd say.

Actually, I should add, the noise doesn't appear straight away, but after maybe 5 seconds of starting.

Is the plastic cover fixed properly. sounds like the belts rubbing on the cover.

If the alternator has a slip pulley, these are very common to seize and produce noises.

Sounds like a knackered bearing to me. As per Lashout's post, pop the belt off and see if it goes away.

Had the same noise on my bora same engine, was driving home one day and there was a large bang in the engine bay. Turned out the pully on the alternator had snapped off so id have a quick look at that if i were you.

From when the Alternator gets to the required RPM and starts to charge and is being loaded?
