OK, this is a friend's Socket A mobo, he currently has a 1GHz Athlon in there and we're curious to see what model it is! I'm pretty sure it's an MSI because you can just about make out "Micro Star Computer" on the back of the yellow plastic port cover, but which model? I tried the number that's on the same sticker on MSI's website and on Google, thinking it might be a serial number, but it hasn't come up with anything...

I should've mentioned that I had already tried CPU-Z and it didn't return any info at all. Also, after I posted this thread I went onto MSI's website and checked the pics of ALL their old discontinued socket A boards and drew up a blank.

However, I took semi-pro waster's advice and downloaded Aida32, and I'm glad to report that those of you who said PC Chips were bang on the money! Special kudos to paul_64l and markyb for guessing the right model too! :)

Aida reported M810LR (not LMR), so I went onto pcchips.com.tw to find out what processors it supports, so we could see if we could get his rig a little bit more up to speed. Unfortunately, there seem to be about 17 different revisions of that board - about 7 of them are labelled "M810L", and I assume ours is one of those, but I've no way of identifying which one! :/

I don't think this is important though, as the CPU he's got in there is already a 1GH Palomino, so I'm guessing it'll support faster Pallies and possibly T-birds. It would be good to know though, as some of the "M819Ls" listed on the PC CHips site can support up to a 2600+, while others can only handle up to a 2200+. It's got an SiS730 chipset though, we know that much, and there seem to be plenty of more recent BIOSes we could download for it, so I guess it's just a matter of how many risks that friend of mine wants me to take with his board! :p

Nice hairy fingers btw, I suggest you never go for a job as a hand model
I'll have you know that not only am I a celebrated hand model, but also famous for being the most sought-after foot model in all of Hobbiton! :p

That's what I used to think to, but I'm more likely to be wrong than Cpu-Z is:

Is it possible the guy who built the system for him didn't have any 1GHz processors in stock so he put in a faster one and underclocked it? If that's so then all I need to do is get him some 133MHz SDRAM and he'll get a 33% speed boost without even overclocking anything!

Well, if it is a Pally it'll obviously run at 133MHz if we put in 133MHz memory. I'm back in Leeds now and he's in London, so taking the heatsink off will have to wait till the next time I'm there - I don't trust him to do it! If Aida also identifies it as a Pally though, I'll send him a stick of 133MHz SD-RAM I've got lying around in one of my boxes to see whether it'll work. If it does, I'll encourage him to buy some 133MHz-rated memory to replace what he's got, and that'll definitely give him a nice speed boost right there. He shouldn't have any trouble picking one up from a computer fair or auction site.
