Identify this WW2 War movie

A mate of mine has been trying to identify a war movie he watched over 20 years ago, can you help?

Only thing he can remember is it finished with the hero, playing a Englishman, pretending to be a German officer (black uniform), lands at an airfield, having completed his mission, but because he doesn't identify himself gets shot by the allied soldiers, he thinks there was a woman with him and he was blonde.

He has watched many suggestions, including 'Where Eagles Dare' but hasn't found the film, any ideas?

Thanks, but not the right one, I think that is too late, it was an earlier colour film, round about the late 60s to 70s, where the colour was too vibrant or more than the later films.

It doesn't sound like any of the more well known movies. Any idea of actors?

no, his memory is a bit sketchy, but I remember a film that I think ends in a similar way, where the spy lands and speaks german and then gets mistaken for a real german and gets shot but I cant remember what it was.

Play Dirty... A dirty dozen esq film with Brits dressed as Germans etc doesnt sound quite the same but does end with Michael Caine getting gunned down in German uniform surrendering to the Allies.
