I've been tasked with fixing an iPod with a smashed screen, the screen is non-functional and so I can't get in to settings to see whether it is a 1st, 2nd, or 3rd generation device.
1st gen: the back is flat and you can see a good reflection of yourself the edge is black
It comes in a black box
2nd gen: the back is curved distorted reflection and the aluminium back wraps right around to the
front and it has a speaker
It comes in a plastic case
3rd gen:looks exactly the same as the 2nd generation
comes in the came case but with mic

If not, look at the model number on the back near where the capacity is engraved. A1318 = 3rd and A1288 = 2nd. No number? It's a first generation with a flat back
