I'm trying to find out if my Phenom II 955 is a 95w or 125w version. is there a way I can do this "without" removing the heatsink to have a look at the "family" code etched into the cpu heatspreader. Is there a software app, bios option, or whatever that can tell me this.

Cheers:)

Well I've already tried cpu-z, and I'm probably reading it wrong. I can see the family is "F", ext family is "10", etc, but these figures mean nothing to me unless I can find a table/ chart somewhere that tells me what "F" represents, ie: 95w or 125w even if thats what this letter denotes
See what I mean mate?
I want to check mobo/ cpu compatibility and some mobos don't like 125w cpus so I want to see what the power rating my 955 is, before I buy the mobo to ensure I get the right version, one that'll support the higher wattage cpu. It appears the compatibility charts for various mobo makers, quote these long codes, about 10-12 characters long, letters and numbers, etched on the heatspreader of the cpu. I can check if mine is a certain power rating by comparing these numbers, but I'll have to take the heatsink off have a gander, which is something I'd rather not have to do.

Stepping C2 is 125W
Stepping C3 can be either.

If it's stepping C3, then the part number (from the box or the cpu) will tell you:

HDX955FBK4DGM is 125W
HDX955WFK4DGM is 95W
HDZ955FBK4DGM and HDZ955FBGMBOX (Black edition) are both 125W

So, if you have a C3 Black Edition it is 125W. If it is stepping C3 and not a black edition the only way to tell is by looking at the top of the chip (unless you have a record of the part number from when you bought it) as the CPUID is the same and they have identical specs apart from the TDP

In CPU-Z what you really want to look at is the stepping: http://images.anandtech.com/reviews/cpu/amd/phenom2/955/955.jpg

As you can see it says "2", which is the C2 revision, this is the 125w variant. The C3 revision is the 95w one and CPU-Z will say the stepping is "3" and the revision is "RB-C3".

I checked (and corrected) my post above yours, and there are 4 different part numbers with stepping C3. All have the same CPUID, and the only way to tell them apart is from the info I posted (knowing whether they are Black Edition or knowing the part number)
