If someone was a member of an internet forum (similar to this) and only one moniker was allowed and they had two, could the moderators of the site know??
Say one moniker was John Jones and the other was Jim Smith, and sometimes they logged on from the same PC, can they be tracked??
Would ISP address or something be the same?
What would the Moderators have to do to know?
Nothing illegal or anything here, just a bit of "banter" that they know.
Something was said to make the person think the moderators certainly know the country of origin, but would they be able to put two and two together and know that John Jones and Jim Smith are the one and same

if you're logged in as a mod there's a little icon by your name which, when clicked, gives your IP address - from that you can get country and ISP.

You have to use either an ISP, institution or work based e-mail address (mainly) to join so they know that.

They can block both your IP and your e-mail addy.

It's a case of they wont be looking unless you've given them a reason to be suspicious IMHO though - like making this thread - which seems very dodgy to me.

Thanx............nothing dodgy
It's a soccer site and the mods indicated thru banter that they knew where they came from.
I was just wondering if they did know or were bluffing

From your IP address (which moderators should be able to retrieve in most run-of-the-mill forum software) moderators are able to determine, vaguely, where the IP originates. It depends on your ISP though - some may route all traffic through a proxy of some sort, some may place the town/city the IP originates from in the hostname etc.

Most importantly, if they wanted to check whether two users originated from the same computer, they'd just compare the IP addresses. If they're the same - as they are likely to be with many broadband connections these days, or if you have a static IP - it's instantly obvious that the accounts are being used by the same person :)

Most forum software will also show:

> All IPs users login from
> All users used by an IP

If you also look at the server logs to see the user agent and other details then you can be pretty certain it's the same physical location :)
