We have a PVC front door. The lock works that if you are on the outside and close it you cant just pull the handle down to open it, you have to use the key.

Personally I hate this setup, but I've no idea what its called.

The inside handle is a normal looking pull down handle but the outside is a short handle that ends in a square shape. I know its a bit vague but does anyone know what its called? I would like to know so I can try to find a normal handle/lack to replace it.

Nightlatch with a Stubby pull grip? What needs changing about it?

No its not a night latch. Its in the place where a normal handle is, it looks like a normal door handle. Ill have to put up a photo later.

I want to have a door that you have to lock manually not one that you cant open from the outside after you close it without a key.

The terms you are looking for are "split spindle" i.e. you can't operate the latch from the outside unless you use the key and "lever pad" for the type of handle on the outside.

You should be able to swap out the split spindle for a solid one and change the handle.

That's the ticket, thanks.
