Hi all,
so i've got a laptop with a dead drive, which im replacing with a SSD.
I have windows disks; the laptop has a COA on the bottom and with a magnifying glass i can make out the product key, but the bit above telling me which version of windows it is has been worn off
I did a google image search for the COA of various versions to see if they are different. It looks to be win7 home, so i loaded up a disk and input the key (double checked it) but it fails saying its invalid.
Maybe i didn't get the version right after all.
So....any ideas how i can ID the version purely from the product key?

Thanks for an help offered.

As far as I know, you can't.

Did you use a 7 Home OEM image, or retail image? If it is a laptop, it would need OEM.

It could also be a volume licence which may not activate with a standard image.

What brand of laptop is it, because some bigger companies might have an agreement with MS that the install image is their own custom one?

I think there is a way or modifying the install image to remove the version, so it installs a generic Windows 7 and when you input the key it activates only the parts relevant to the key version.
Check this for your options.
