Just arguing with a mate, he says that hardly any 32bit stuff will run if you are using the 64bit OS with a C2D cpu.

I said BS, and came running here for virtual support.

Are there Still/Any ongoing problems running 32bit applications?

Im talking primarily gaming here...

is there any performance issues? or anything even in the slightest?

Lets see I have Vista x64 installed with 32 bit software programs like Firefox,CCleaner,Spybot,SpywareBlaster,Nero 7,Zip Genius,Printmaster 16 to name a few.

Game wise this is my current list.

Baldur's Gate with exp pack
Baldur's Gate 2 with exp pack.
KOTOR
KOTOR 2 (With sound patch fix)
Space Rangers 2 (Without Starforce protection)
Oblivion
Morrowind with all Exp packs
Jedi Academy
Jedi Outcast
Vanguard
World oF Warcraft with exp pack
XCOM-Enforcer
UT2004
Dark&Light
9 Dragons
Silverfall
Stalker
Prey
Starcraft +Exp pack
UFO-Afterlight
Steam games(TFC,CS,DoD etc)

Performance wise its down to Vista drivers and they are getting better,I don't have any gaming problems.
I'm using an AMD ATHLON X2 CPU.

Not all 32 bit software is 100% compatible with Vista(does not matter if its 32 bit or 64 bit version of Vista),however generally most 32 bit software runs fine.
So I guess he is a little wrong ;).

I've been using 64bit Vista since December and love it.
The compatability issues are more hardware than they are software.
To be honest the majority of applications are going to work just fine.
There are a few applications that are a problem under Vista in general, but very few that are specifically Vista64 - basically if there is a problem with an application it will be under all flavours of Vista, not just Vista64.

Back in December and for ages Vista driver support wasn't great, so again gaming wasn't easy.
I stuck by the OS whilst others went back to XP - and I'm pleased I did.
I still have the same installation I had back in December and now with proper NVidia drivers it is absolutely fine as a gaming platform.

64bit driver support is the only real issue.
People are reporting very few wireless devices appear to be ready for 64bit.
I'm having problems with video capture devices - I've bought and returned a Hauppauge card and then more recently bought a Pinnacle USB device (which I'm also tempted to return due to lack of 64bit support).

I'm pleased I've taken the 64bit route.
I shall now be sticking with 64bit Windows - if an application fails to run then I'll simply not use it.
It's the software house that loses out as I'll buy from one of their rivals instead.
However so far everything I've thrown at Vista64 has worked fine.

*Oh and yes, I am also running a Core 2 Duo*

I'd say that, in fact, hardly any 32bit stuff won't run if you are using the 64bit OS.

There shouldn't be any performance issues - in fact, because of improvements in the x64 kernel you might even see performance improvements. The EM64T instruction set allows the processor to be 'switched' into 32-bit mode to run 32-bit code, so there's no emulation going on.
