Had to change the glowplugs on a neighbours car today, the recent cold snap had shown the existing plugs weren't up to the job.

Did plugs 1->3 fine, but umm, (this is the embarasing bit) where does plug number 4 fit?

If replies here arent forthcoming . . . .

Useful cheers. After hunting around i saw mention of "3 plug" & "4 plug" systems. Brilliant idea.

i believe its behind the fuel pump
and a pig to replace as you need to remove the pump

That's the problem, where the other plugs are fitted on the other 3 cylinders, there is just a flat "blank" in the casting.

I'd just hope it was one duff plug (usually is) and that number 4 is ok :)

Two dead, one working. Meaning there was one good plug over 4 cylinders.

Although i do believe some came with three heater plugs also?.
:)

Must admit i'm not surprised to find it was never fitted with the right number of plugs, part of the Rover ethos i suppose.

You can test heater plugs Without removing them ;)

Disconnect them all from the leccy & earth.
Get a crocodile clip/lead set up & attach it to the positive of the battery.
Touch each heater plug in turn.
The good ones will Spark.
The Duff one will not.
Not 100% but it has Never let me down yet
Saves taking any of the good ones out & you can find the duff one & Only deal with that one.

Doesn't detect a weak plug though does it?

I had a weak one on the ZX, though using biodiesel made it an issue rather than the weak plug itself.

Fool proof way does involve taking them out, put the plug in a vice and connect to a battery. If it goes red all the way down to the tip it's OK if not replace it :)
