I have 2 PCs with XP home on both, a cat5e crossover cable connecting them and a desire to transfer data from one to the other. Would someone tell me what I need to enable / install to get them talking? Thanks

Nothing, provided they both have working ethernet adapters...

Just share the folders you want to copy. This can be done by right-clicking, selecting properties and clicking the "sharing" tab.

youll prob need to manually set IP details on each box if you have troubles..

If you want one to share files with another the network setup wizard can designate it as a server to avoid problems. Then you can share folders\map network drives etc.

OK so just connect them up and start the wizard and say I want to share files and one is a server. No prob. thanks

Thanks. Do i get that from ipconfig? Where would I need to set it?

its in control panel, network, properties of Local Area Connection, TCI/IP properties.

tbh i use that to stop the wizards from cocking up existing network settings, but then if you dont normally use any settings just use the wizard like suggested.
