idiots guide to DIY pc

I agree with Dom86's (above) build, but if you need to bring that budget down, swap out:
Toshiba 2TB 7200RPM SATA 6/GB/s 64MB Cache HDD - OEM

for this:
https://www.overclockers.co.uk/seag...64mb-cache-hdd-oem-st1000dm003-hd-334-se.html

It'll save £15, 1TB should be plenty for what a 13-year old needs - its enough for me, and I make games.

He doesn't need a disk drive with the above spec, but its worth checking that he doesn't have any games on disc that he can't download (he should know this). Unless he has Blu-Ray films to watch, and no access to a PS3/PS4/XBox One, stick with a DVD drive. They're much cheaper, and you can stream just about any film in HD these days on Netflix, etc.

Also - Windows 10 is a must over Windows 8.

Above build has some upgrade headroom later, but its also a damn-fine specification for right now, it should have no problem tacking just about any game he throws at it.

really appreciate your help so far and i got my son to look at all your suggestions but wants the above.thanks

I believe that all looks good.

One thing is does he need a optical drive? games are all digital downloads these days using either Steam, Origin, Uplay etc.

You can get Win10 on a USB drive for £85.

Is that Samsung thing on the list above an optical drive?
And whats that youve put "win 10 on a usb drive"?

Thanks

Awesome, this is an ace thread.

I sincerely hope 'smiley son' is going to post some build photos. And make his Mum the odd cuppa tea for such a wicked rig :p
