Has anyone got a link to a webpage that has essentially an idiot's guide to troubleshooting an internet connection?

Normally I'd just google the type of problem I have the go from there. The problem here is that it's my parents house that has issues, and they're not very tech savvy. Unfortunately I'm not much better when it comes to networking, so I was wondering if there's a webpage I can copy and take with me with so I don't have to drive the 10 miles > come back > google it > go back and try it > rinse repeat.

All I know at the minute is that their phone line works but the internet and email doesn't...

Broadband works off 2 main items.
Sync (DSL signal)
Authentication (PPP)

You need both.
You can't have PPP without sync.

If you have no sync, check physical hardwares i.e filters, cables.
If you have no auth, 10 minute power down, check router config.

I've just been on the phone to them for 30 mins and have managed to find out the following....

There's nothing wrong with the internet, the problem is that my dad cancelled the direct debit to them as he thought it was my brother's mobile contract, not the broadband contract (both with talk talk).

Ahhh the joys of old people :p.

Sorry for the false alarm (although this would still be handy to know if such a page exists!)
