iDisk vs. XXX?

As you may have seen in other posts, i have started using iDisk as a backup medium (I work directly from the offline iDisk and let it do its syncing/backup in the background)

this sounds good, but I have 2 issues:

• outrageously slow
• some inconsistencies (spent a bit of time moving the files about, and it seems to have kindof merged some of the old folder layout with the new - had it backed up in another local folder so not a big deal but the fact that this even happened has lost iDisk a few trust points...)

So, was wondering about other options? - is Dropbox a viable alernative (in its 50GB guise) for solid backup? or are there more focused applications maybe?

www.mozy.com

The latest Mac version is buggy, I had to downgrade for it to work properly. But I had a chat with their support and they seem to be working on a fix that is due out soon.

Other than that I've been using it for a year now with no problems.

I'll take a look at Transmit (in fact i recently installed a demo version just to have a play) - in terms of using as an FTP i think Forklift on the whole is a fair bit better (especially since 1.6 came out) but if there is an advantage relating to iDisk interaction maybe i'd consider using both...

JungleDisk is extremely solid. Nicely configurable as well (Manual backup, multiple scheduled backups, encryption, file versioning, ..)

They have Mac, Windows and Linux clients. I really like it - my computers could go up in flames any day and I'll lose no data :)

Actually going to trial it again. If it's rubbish I'm calling my mammy :p

good on ya :)

for a very minimalistic, but still very usable interface try these options:

• turn off the toolbar (use shortcuts)
• turn off the sidebar and use ESC for a popup version (EDIT: or the tiny arrow at the top left of each pane)
• turn on "show tab bar" - very useful
• go to "show view options" and pop it down to 11pt - much nicer :)

then get used to the clone panel, flip panel shortcuts and you're good to go ;) - i dont actually use finder anymore...

quick question about this... i've had a read, and it seems pretty decent, but i'm a bit confused about its auto-backup facilities, can it do it all out of the box cuz it mentions you can use third party sync apps such as rsync?

Tried Forklift.. didn't really appeal to me.

Too cluttered, and not sure on the practical use of the giant finder panes :(

Fair enough matey each unto their own...

so, tried this Amazon S3 thing (also downloaded a trial of JungleDisk to latch onto it, but tbh it didn't feel like a very polished app) - and am trying to give it a go via Forklift...

now this issue i have is with the S3 buckets not forklift, but how finnicky is the naming system? whenever i try to create a bucket, it says "Server response: The specified bucket is not valid."

the only way i got it to create anything was when i got frustrated and typed a great big stream of random letters as the name

whats the deal with it? no spaces alowed maybe (despite the example showing "my bucket")?

its a shame really, a lot of us have mobileme hence have this idisk feature but just dont use it due to it being that poor...

how can apple have it so wrong? maybe they should use amazon s3 storage like dropbox do...

With Amazon, all bucket names have to be unique across the system (not just your account).

So try adding your initials or something to the name, as most simple names will be taken.

When you create a bucket you should also get the option to choose the US or Europe as the location. This affects speed and pricing. Transmit will ask you, Cyberduck won't.

Jungledisk is working well for me, on both leopard and windows. I have set the folders to backup, and just hit backup manually when I want things backed up. It mentions Rsync because you can use that, or another backup system if you wish. You can set jungledisk to mount an S3 bucket as a normal drive, so rsync / third party apps can use that and not have to be compatible with S3.

I hope that helps. I am trying S3 as I was unimpressed with Mozy (transfer speeds, poor application, limited flexibilty and unknown security). S3 is working well so far.

so with these new sync issues sorted, would you consider iDisk a reliable way of working... at the mo i'm still using the local idisk and manual syncing every night, but i'm not sure if i should be working like this...

as a side note, i synced, then deleted something, then resynced and instead of taking the last action as the master, it re-downloaded the things i had deleted

must say, would be a great tool if it just worked right and at the right speed :(
