Hi all, i am having some issues with the idle rev on my focus which is a 2001 1.6 manual petrol model.
When I am driving and come to a stop I put the car into neutral, the revs jump up to 2000-2100rpm and stay there for about 2 to 3 secs before dropping to about 1000rpm - my feet are off all the pedals. When i am in gear and driving the revs seems to be fine/normal - go into gear the revs are normal.
Does anyone know what could be causing this, what do i need to look at?
I had the clutch replaced about an year ago, less than 8000miles ago.
Thanks in advance guys.

I'd have guessed idle control valve or MAF sensor.
Mine occasionally holds revs or even peaks by a couple hundred if I dip the clutch or when changing gear etc, when cold. Soon as it's warmed up it's fine.

My Golf GTi did that. The throttle body needed cleaning - it's a DIY job, just need a can of WD40 and a load of cotton ear buds.

A clogged up EGR valve can also cause idle issues, so worth cleaning that up, get yourself some carb/throttle body cleaner spray and use that to clean.

thanks, will check on the haynes manual to see where the EGR and throttle body is.. and give it a quick clean.
It does it all the time, even after driving for hours.

I'm sure there was a thread not so long ago with the exact same symptoms as this (Pretty sure it was a Focus too.)

Turned out to be a breather pipe/hose in the end. Had a tear in it.

I had the exact same problem on the exact same car about 4 years ago. It was the idle control valve that needed cleaning out with some carb cleaner. I'm sure there's a thread on here about it with a guide too.
