Just picked up one of the AMD X2 4200+ chips that are on offer this week and was wondering if anyone knew what sort of temp it should be idling at. Haven't tried it at load yet but it is currently sitting at 45 degrees idle with a brand new Alpine 64 cooler on it. Just wondering if that is normal or not as it seems a little high to me?

Way too hot, my AMD 6000X2 idles at 37 with the stock cooler.

Try re-seating the heatsink, and make sure so have screwed the heatsink down tightly :)

Ok. I am using the thermal paste that was supplied on the Arctic 64 heatsink as standard so maybe it will remove that and put some different stuff on. The heatsink appears to be seated fine but i'll give it a go. My room is quite warm so I don't know if that is going to make a difference or not.

that temp is ok.my other pc as a 939.x2 4200 ,thats 45% idle gets to arround 70% underload.its been fine for the last 2 years, its in my sons room now coupled with a 8800gt and plays anything you throw at it,

Oh ok well thats useful to know. I have had a mess in the BIOS and turned off certain fan settings etc that didn't seem to be doing much and whacked on Cool N Quiet as I don't overclock and the temp seems to have come down to 34 degrees idle. Oh I've also mounted a fan on the side of the case to help things along.

Out of interest, what program to people use to reliably get temp and fan information. I'm using SpeedFan but not sure if thats the best option?

I use Coretemp, but I think that only works with Core based Processors. You could try looking on your motherboard's driver CD and seeing if there are any utilities on there.
