IE6 locking up on 2k server for users

Hi, hopefully someone may be able to help

We have a rather strange problem

On a site we have a Windows 2000 Server with Citrix Presentation server installed. Clients log in to Citrix to access their TS desktop and all applications.

When a user (not an admin) opens IE it immediatly locks up and it must be stopped in the task manager. This doesn't happen when admins launch IE.

We have found that wiping the temporary internet files fixes it temporarily but it reappears like 15 minutes later. We have tried moving the location of the temporary internet files but again the issue resurfaces.

Virus and spyware/malware scans have come up with nothing.

If we can't fix this then we are replacing the server with a spare and rebuilding it.

is this openning up IE on the server or on the clients desktop ?

when they do open it, what page are they trying to load, Citrix or do they go to google first, then use a bookmark to get to citrix ?

secondly, are they physically going into IE on the server, or going in through remote ?

have you tried another browser to eliminate IE from this?

if the other one doesn't work either then maybe it is a problem with the network not the server.

They log in to citrix with the desktop client on their local machine which then brings up a TS session with a desktop for them on the server. They don't load any applications on the local machine.

Its as soon as they double click on the IE icon, sometimes they get as far as the homepage and then it locks up. We have tried multiple homepages including google, msn and about:blank all with the same effect.

Unfortunatly one of the applications they use is browser based and only works with IE. They have firefox as a temporary workaround for other stuff but this application is one of the most important.

so this happens when they try and open up IE in a terminal services session ?

and only happens to non admins. If an admin does it its fine..

obviously without administrative priviledges, the user is calling something just by loading IE that they obviously dont have access too. When it attempts to access the file and cant, IE is just sitting there waiting for it to respond.

To my mind id be looking at the way the non admin users are set up in citrix

you can elimate their use profiles themselves, if they have no problem loading IE locally to load this app with limited user accounts

and you can rule out specific terminals being the problem as this effects all users

got to be a citrix issue. Maybe try adding priviledges to their citrix accounts untill you find the one they need ?

has this ever worked, if so what changed to stop it working ?

Thats just the thing, it has always worked up until recently.

We haven't made any changes to the Citrix server in ages. We don't even reguarly do updates because it has broken the server before, we turned windows updates off. Thats why we have considered some sort of malware causing the problem.

Deleting the temporary internet files seems to fix things for a short time as does moving the temporary internet files to a new location.

my guess is then that on startup its trying to write something to the tempoary internet files and its not being able to due to some restriction of the limited user accounts

the clients havent been updated to run IE7 or something have they ?

failing that, try creating a new user with limited access, completely from scratch, and see if they have the problem.

No we don't have IE7 installed.

This issue came up a few weeks ago but luckily we had an image of the server which we restored. We had IE7 when we trying to fix it the first time but it was removed for troubleshooting purposes, didn't have an effect anyway.

The same issue has reared its ugly head again this week though.

Unfortunatly a few people are getting to the end of their tether and want a permanent fix.
