Someone please help me convince my dad to switch to IE7 or even better firefox! He claims he hasn't got the disk space to upgrade to IE7.

Why not just leave him to it if that's what he likes?

I mean seriously, i'm fed up with people trying to force their browsers on others.

Yes i agree theres nothing worse than trying to force you views on somebody. However he knows little about computers and only concern really seems to be hard disk space!

He's worried about diskspace? Has he a 4GB harddrive or something? The difference is minuscule.

Most of the reasons to switch to IE7/8, FF,Opera, etc. such as tabbed browsing, better CSS support probably won't matter much to your dad if he's pretty happy with IE6.
The only other two reasons I can come up with which he might actually care about are:

- More secure.
- Sites such as Facebook, Digg and Youtube are dropping IE6 support. More and more sites will continue to drop IE6 support as the campaign to banish IE6 gains momentum. People used to talk about wishing they could drop IE6 support and are now finally starting to do so. MS says they recommend upgrading but will still support IE6 until 2014. I'm sceptical it will really last that long.

IE6 is a god-awful abomination that is holding back large parts of the Internet and costing millions of pounds in unnecessary web development.

Later versions are still pretty poor but are faster, much more secure and support modern code better.

So?

If the guy feels that he wants to use IE6, let him. It's supposed to be the user's choice.

IE6 sickens me. Its the biggest piece of crap ever.

Yes people have a right to use it, but technology won't move on if everyone gets stuck in the past.

Put simply give him a slap then install it, lol.

It might be the user's choice, but reasoning like that is why large parts of the web are stuck in the same place they were in 2001. Internet users are very lucky. Developers can't just switch off web pages to people using ancient browsers, like mobile phone manufacturers do to people with ancient phones.

best leave it to people to choose which browser

MS IE 6 or 7 or 8
Mozilla Firefox 3.0.13 or 3.5.2
Opera 9 (latest new Opera 10)
Google Chrome
Safari
Flocker
or others

that up to you which one - people cannot tell which one or force to... it still up to people to choose which one - Windows 7 will included ballot box that would give people to choose which browser (Vista/XP will included as well). Im using Fx 3.5.2 cos of add-on and choose theme you like also easier when typing on address bar without begin at www.

It's still his choice.

I appreciate what you're saying, and I agree. But it's still his own choice.

Rather than forcing IE7/8/FF/Opera/Safari/Chrome on him, why not let him try a PC with a different browser installed, to see if he likes them.

I did he used FF and it took him 10 minutes to even realize. If i could give him one reason to change he agrees with he said he would but im yet to find one! Hes to set in him ways if he had his choice he'd still be using Windows 98.

Because the more people that stay on IE6 means there are more headaches for developers who have to make their webapps and sites IE6 compatible. Everyone should be moved to at least IE7.

If it's an old era Windows XP machine (i.e. 128MB to 256MB of RAM), you may find it will struggle to run anything else.

IE7/8, Firefox whatever all need far far far more memory than IE6 ever needed.

I have an old Sony Vaio laptop with 256MB and just having IE8 open is enough to start getting disk swapping.

Nobody should be using IE6 unless they are in the small fraction of users who absolutely need it for compatibility reasons.

If he would willingly use Windows 98 on the Internet then he obviously isn't technically minded. The problem is it sounds like he doesn't trust your opinion. Perhaps try to get someone else to explain to him in a different way the reasons behind keeping pace with software versions.

Some people, particularly older people, think of computers like appliances such as a freezer or toaster and don't appreciate the almost constant maintenance they require.

True, I think the only real way to kill IE6 is for more and more websites to break compatibility. I've given up trying to get my dad to change to Firefox. It nearly made me cry when I saw he had multiple IE8 windows open. I had to bite my tongue.

Upgrade it to IE8 when he's not looking and turn off tabbed browsing. Ten-to-one he won't notice.

Because he doesn't like IE6 - he's using an older browser because he's misinformed, hence the disk space remarks. He might like IE, but he doesn't like IE6. Upgrading to IE8 isn't exactly forcing another browser on him. I could understand his annoyance if you switched him to Firefox, but with IE8 things will be just the same, except that the internet will be faster and will work better.

Developers can't just switch off web pages to people using ancient browsers

It's difficult to do, but slowly they can and are. Soon enough, YouTube will stop working with IE6. Will he be happy then?

If he hasn't got the diskspace to update to IE7 then I don't think there is much point convincing him, apart from anything else it'll likely be an old/slow PC anyway.

Convince him to get a bigger HD or delete from rubbish, and then go for IE8, assuming he has at least 384meg RAM.
