Does anyone know why IE7 has been removed from Windows Update for XP SP2 users?

If you do a clean install of XP SP2 and head off to Windows update, you used to get IE7 as one of the 90 odd updates. It's no longer in the list.

I think it has moved to Options so you have to add it manually in Windows Update to download it.

It was there when I installed about a week ago. Are you sure you're not just missing it? I think it will now only show up once you've installed all or most of the other critical updates, if you haven't done that then do so and try again. I think it's behaviour might have just changed rather than having been completely removed.

It could be down to the fact that they removed the WGA laws on it, so now anyone can download it from their website. :)

I just saw the message on the IE7 blog (blogs.msdn.com/ie) which says that they've recently redone the installation program for IE7 (it no longer requires WGA validation) - and there are a couple of other small changes (ie. the menu bar is now visible by default in IE7, yuck!). They say that the new version will be available via Windows Updates but it might be that there's just a delay in the update.
