IE8 Help - links don't work?

Got a problem with a PC at the moment that's got me stumped.

Randomly, right clicking or left clicking to new window/tab only works for a few links. For example, if I click on the DVLA website, then click apply.. nothing happens but if i drag the link to a new tab, that works.

I've checked the event manager, shows nothing.

I've tried the normal suspects such as reseting all defaults under IE options so security settings are as shipped. I've also gone as far as reseting .dll files (fix 50191) and reseting IE8 (fix 50195) but to no avail.

I had a similar problem with a PC when reverting back to IE8 from IE9 but I can't for the life of me find my notes.. I know i created a .exe file but my guess it was the same .dll reset.

I'm not keen on reinstalling windows for an IE problem not is using another browser.

Is there anything I may have missed

strange problem, one thing you could try is running IE in safe mode (in the search bar in the start menu type iexplore –extoff). If there is an addon causing the problem then you may find the problem goes away in safe mode (maybe a bundled addon is behaving badly).

Yep tried that as well as disbling all add-ons anyway. No difference.

Interesting though that IE8-64 works fine..

Does this give any clues?

btw this is a win7-64 bit OS.
