IE8 keeps deleting browsing history

I have Windows XP SP3 with Internet Explorer 8.
In Internet Options, I have it set not to delete the browsing history on exit.
However, it always does. I can see in the content.IE5 folders all the temporary internet files disappear once the browser is closed.

How do I stop it doing this? I've tried setting and unsetting the tick box, deleting all the folders within content.IE5, to no avail.

(When I get home I'll attempt running it with no add-ons and see what happens. Meantime is there anything else?)

Thanks!

Probably not the answer your looking for but as you can't install IE9 on Windows XP I would suggest taking a look at Chrome or Opera..

I got home, tried running IE with no add-ons. Then I opened a few websites and some temp files appeared, closed the browser and the temp files didn't get deleted.
Then I opened IE normally, opened a few sites, saw some more temp files appear, closed IE down and ...the files stayed where they were.
edit:
today it's deleting all the temp files no matter if I use the 'no addons' or regular IE8 and regardless of the check box in Options.
