I use Chrome for web browsing, never touch internet explorer but in task manager I often find iexplore processes. Is this normal?

They all point to the correct folder: C:\Program Files (x86)\Internet Explorer; MSE/MalwareBytes scans don't turn up anything.

Thanks

if your not using IE then it should not be running.

if you reboot the PC are they there from the first point of the OS being ready to use?

also if you close them down to the re appear in task manager?

if you don't use IE go to the folder its loading from and re name the exe file to iexplorer.ex (example)

this should stop anything loading IE as the shortcut extension has been renamed but this will make IE not work at all

Good idea, though I cant make any changes or even move the file without "trusted installer" permission, though I have have administrator rights (pc has only one user).

I'd run both a virus scan and a malware scan on that machine. It sounds like it's infected.

The IE Engine is used sometimes by other programs such as McAfee for example however, so maybe it's that or another antivirus performing an update?

Even if you don't use IE you should keep it updated, due to the fact that being built-into Windows the IE engine is still often used by programs and not updating it means that the security holes are not being patched.

yeah, you need to change the permissions and owner to be able to do it.

I just done it on my PC and after doing so I was able to re name the exe

I keep everything up to date, IE updates come through windows updates dont they?

System seems fine, I was hoping maybe some other program uses iE when I do updates or something. I have run MSE and MB but Il do another run.

How do you change permissions to be abble to mod the IE exe?

Thanks for your input, appreciated.

right click on iexplorer.exe and go to properties, click on the security tab and then advanced down the bottom right on the next screen click on Owner tab along the top and then edit down the bottom left.

click on other users and groups button and put in everyone in the "entre the object name to select" box and hit ok, press ok on the previous screen and it should change from current owner to everyone.

click on the permissions tab and click on change permissions, click on add and then type in everyone again and press ok, on the next screen that appears clock the top box of the allow column and all should become ticked, press ok after, press ok on the previous screen and try again

You might find that it's a third party application that is using IE to render the interface. For instance, I think Steam used to use IE, but they've now moved over to something different.

Maybe one of the other applications you have running is firing up IE processes, and if you start renaming files, you could cause some unforeseen problems.

I'm hoping that is the cause and not something malicious. I've just done another full scan (including for rootkits) in Malwarebytes and MSE and nothing comes up plus my machine is running fine. Just fired up IE, its up to date and all processes disappeared when I closed it.

This.

Work on reducing your startup items, could be anything launching iexplore.exe to display it's content.

On a fresh boot, how many processes do you have running?

Fresh install is about 45. Install with drivers and a few tools running = nearer 70-80

I run my machine pretty lean and mean so only the stuff I use is installed, I keep them updated, regularly AV scan, Cclean and defrag etc.

In msconfig I have only 5 things (including steam) that run on startup and at idle after fresh boot, about 55-60 processes are running so not much really.

My machine runs great, I'm just a little paranoid seeing iexplore when I dont ever use it.
