iexplore.exe processes running and noises in the background

Boot to safe mode with networking. Download & install malwarebytes. Update the definitions & perform a full system scan.

This sounds more like the black internet virus which will need more then malwarebytes to get rid of as it makes use of the boot sector and replacing the MBR is the only way to get rid of it along with bringing anything it was hiding on the computer into the light of any scanners (I posted a link to a tool that can detect this nasty in the boot sector and help to get rid of it).

Had something similar a few weeks ago, an ever increasing number of instances of internet explorer appearing under task manager but nothing actually onscreen. My pc visting random sites invisibly including blinkx and some others.
What I could hear were videos playing on the various sites being secretly visited. Malwarebytes found nothing neither did security essentials or trend housecall. You might try the malwarebytes anti-rootkit beta from here

to see if anything nasty has been well hidden.
On my particular machine I found that running msconfig showed a couple of unexpected entries running at startup.
Firstly I had Fujitsu Touchpad driver listed which is a bit odd on a desktop pc, also some part of S3 video driver was also listed there. Neither should be in the list so I disabled them and all the hidden internet explorer crap ceased.
I firmly believe these rogue apps came from ads on a well known football streaming site.
