If gpu is dvi-D does the lead from a VGA screen have to be DVI-D?

i have a VGA monitor which i want to plug into a DVI-D socket on my GPU but can that end that goes into the gpu be dvi A etc or does it have to be dead on DVI-D as the socket please ?
