Hi,

If i buy a rift S what other cables and extensions would i need to make it as smooth as possible on day one? I read a lot about extension cables... Is there a wireless option too? Is it worth it... I know the rift s is an entry level system.

Talking to the experienced users here :P

Also i have a big head! is this gonna cause problems?

Oculus Quest is wireless if that's what you want.

I found the cable on the Rift S is plenty long enough plugged into the back of my PC with lots of room to move around. You shouldn't need anything extra than what comes in the box really.

These seem to be the common things:
Headphones
Prescription lenses if you use glasses
Alternate face covers for hygene/comfort

Also if you do plan on playing vigorous exercise games in your Rift S you'll need a thin sweatband or bandana or similar to keep the sweat off the headset.

You don't absolutely need extension cables. But they do make you a bit more flexible. And an additional advantage I found relates to Subnautica - which defaults to VR mode if you have the Rift plugged in, even if you don't want it to. Much easier to unplug it from the extension cables than from the back of your PC!

If you do decide to get extension cables, these worked perfectly for me and cost about a tenner altogether:

One tip I would give, whether you use extensions or not - always plug the USB cable first, wait for the indicator light in the Rift to turn white, then connect the DP. Gives the least chance of the connection screwing up.

Amvr grips are a god send if you have shovels like mine, I plan to upgrade the face pads too as I've noticed in this heat things get very sweaty and not very comfortable.

Rechargeable batteries and the extension cables are also essential as far as I'm concerned. Cables in particular as it means you're not having to get behind the pc every five minutes when you want to use it.

You certainly don't need prescription lens. My Rift S fits over my glasses perfectly, lens have never touched

Definitely decent rechargeable batteries.
The Amazon ones, for some reason, only work in one of my controllers

Big head won't be an issue, the 'halo' design is very adjustable.

unless big head = too large IPD

Have you measured your IPD op? If not then it might be worth doing so... if you aren’t in the middle of the range you may be better served by a headset with hardware adjustable IPD.

there’s a free app that’s good for doing it quickly and pretty accurately called eye measure (on iOS, don’t know if it’s on android but if not no doubt there’s an equivalent). Failing that there’s always a mirror and a ruler!

What else do you need? The ability to avert your eyes from Facebook's ownership of Occulus. So don't forget to stop the connection in settings to hand your data willingly over to Facebook: https://www.extremetech.com/gaming/303310-facebook-oculus-vr-data-advertising . In the future, when it no longer becomes possible to opt out you'll likely consider that to be either acceptable or not.

Also it's now required to have a facebook account to use social features, like friends lists. Facebook changed that without warning a while ago, after previously everything working fine through an Oculus account. I don't have a Facebook account for various reasons, so this means no new MP friends for me on the platform. (For some reason it's ok to keep the friends you had, but you can't befrend anyone new without Facebook linking).
