If I have to replace my Sky Router? Should I get their Hub 2 or 3... Or something else?

So I think my old Sky sagecom router is possibly failing.

They said I can buy a Sky Hub 2 or 3 off them? Any recommendations if it comes to that?

If it's faulty then they should replace free of charge...

Years out of warranty... Just wondering if any other folks here have experience of the Hub 2 or 3 etc?

Main concern really is ensuring wifi is not worse than my old Sagecom!

I'd say Hub 3. Ask to be put through to broadband cancellations as I'm almost sure they can do the hub 3 free with a recontract. Dual band wifi, ac support and two Gigabit Ethernet ports.

We still have about 9 months of a contract left (for a lower price) etc...

So I can't threaten to leave etc.

The gigabit ports will be useful, because all the rest of the network is gigabit switches/PCs etc...

I don't think it works that way.. They gave me a free router X years ago, and now if it fails? It's the same with their Sky boxes too.

Keep complaining till they send you a free one.

Is this from experience?

And of course all they'll do is send be a reconditioned Hub 2, which they sell for £25 (or so)... Where as by the sounds of it the Hub 3 is the better option!?

I would have no issues with Sky not giving you replacement hardware out of a warranty period if they were happy to hand over your connection credentials when asked.

Since they won't do that, and instead sort of force you into taking their (in the case of the post-Netgear pre-Q hardware) poor quality options, they should really be replacing them FOC.

Alas, I suspect if you push them on this matter, they would then simply be most likely to send you the cheapest option (a refurbed old router) than quite possibly the better option (a nice new Hub 3)?

It seems my drop in internet speed is now being blamed on my router. I was getting for as long as I can recall (downloading) 11-12mbps, and I'm now connecting on the router at only about 7mbps (and downloading 5-6mbps).

The BT engineer said his device said my socket should be capable of 10mbps so can't account for why the router is only willing to connect at 6-7mbps.

Given my router has ben flaky in the past week or so (refusing to even turn on and having wierd flashing shorting out lights once) the finger of blame is now the router.

So I'm going to try and borrow a spare one to see if that connects at a better speed therefore showing my router needs replacing.

The worrying thing is if I don't even get back to my 11-12mbps which I used to get, and instead my new "norm" is now 7-9mbps :(

For ADSL your speed should be a function of your socket distance from the 'cabinet' - so you can check that via a web-site (broadbandchoices etc) by giving your post-code, if you do that it will confirm whether you would expect 11-12 or 7-9mbs.

(When you said 'your router' is having a problem, I assume you mean the modem/adsl part of the Hub, and also that you are seeing problem when you have a wired connection to hub, so ruling out any wireless problem )

For many many years, through a number of providers and routers, I've always had 12-13mbps. Then a couple of weeks ago I noticed poor performance. Looking at the router I could see it was connecting at speeds of around 6-7mbps. Speed test obviously reflected this.

And so started this whole matter...

About a week or so ago (after this problem started), I came home to find my router in a sorry state and I couldn't even turn it on. The power and broadband lights would just end up flashing twice a seconds for periods of time almost as if the device was shorting out. I even tried a different PSU. In the end I turned it on and did a hard reset and that seemed to bring it back to life.

I've now tried replacement micro filters in master socket etc.

Anyway, Mr BT man came yesterday and say my socket it reading about 10mbps (which obviously isn't 12-13) but is obviously more than the 6-7mbps my router is connected at.

So the current finger of blame is now my router... I'm trying to borrow one rather than buy one to test. Worse case I'll have to buy one and hope it resolves the matter.
