at the moment i have steam installed on G: but want to move it to C:
can i just move it across or would i need to uninstall from G: and install to C:
in doing so will i lose all data from steam like my progress on MW2

if i lose everything then i will forget about the whole thing :P and not bother

Just copy the entire steam folder across to a new drive.

I then delete clientregistry.blob and let it rebuild itself.

copy entire steam folder to new place and run steam.

remember non valve games will put their saves in their default place (usually my documents somewhere) valve games saves are i nthe steam folder.

You could also use the mklink function in the command prompt in order to distribute your games across multiple drives if it's simply a case of you needing more space.

If you uninstall steam it will also uninstall all your steam games and you have to download them all again....

Don't ask me how i know this :(:o

If you back up everything in your steamapps folder you should be ok.

Either of these will work fine. I tend to do what OzZie stated. All your apps are contained in the steamapps folder as JimAroo said.

This will work also.

Of course remember not worry that your steam games will never get lost. Just copy everything over (the whole steam folder), but make sure you delete the old one from original hard drive (or partition)

Rather than copying the entire steam folder just copy the steamapps folder, uninstall steam so it removes everything properly then reinstall to the new location + move steamapps back

I did exactly the same thing yesterday

If i uninstall steam, i would then have to reinstall DX about 150 times again :(

fortunatly ive only got MW2 and just put in borderlands butborderlands is non steam game!!!

i jsut dont want to loose all my progress in MW2

you guys really are wasting time re-installing steam. you just move the whole folder and run steam.exe from the new location and it will register itself as a windows service. there's no need to run the installer ever again.

I did this very thing yesterday having installed a new hard drive to give me extra space.

I simply copied the entire Steam folder to the new drive, deleted the clientregistry.blob, deleted the original from my Programe files folder. Ran steam which asked me to located Steam.exe, which I did, a couple of minutes of 'updating Steam' later it ran and listed all my games like normal and all was well with it, couldn't have been simpler

Utter waste of time though, no need to uninstall and reinstall as Steam is entirely portable.

why?

That way you have to reinstall steam.

If you copy the whole thing you just need to let it update.
