If i upgrade to 8 will i lose everyone on computer?

i have 64bit win7 HP and thinking whether to try win8, the thing is though ive never upgraded, only ever had pre-installed Operating Systems and so im wondering if the upgrade will just replace win7 or if it actually be like wiping the drive of everything and doing a fresh install??..

If you tell it to keep nothing before the upgrade starts, then it'll wipe everything.

Just select the keep programs, files and settings option (should be the top option) and it'll preserve everything during the upgrade (everything on the desktop will be just as it was before the upgrade).

my laptop which is what im using like has its iffy moments in performance, likely all the crap its gathered over couple years lol and been trying to clear a lot of stuff off and try make it perform faster, would 8 solve this or would it be the stuff id be keeping?

You would be best backing everything up that you would like to keep and formatting the system with windows 8 if that is the case. I don't believe in upgrades myself.

ha thanks for the advise, i did back up most my stuff the other day to my external HDD, about 39GB of content left out of a total 200GB worth lol..

Historically its had mixed results, but if you're upgrading from a cleanish Windows 7 install it will more than likely be fine.

I upgraded my work laptop from the Windows 8 release preview and its been perfect.
