If I'm happy with Vista, why should I upgrade to Windows 7?

I've never really had much problems with Vista. I've only just noticed how much faster XP is compared to Vista. I just got a laptop with XP and it flies even at a lower spec.

Does windows 7 take better advantage at the specs a pc has like xp does? I just need a reason to upgrade.

you'll be happier, less resource drain, looks better, lot less bugs, uses 64 bit very well on nearly all programs, fps gains in games, etc, etc

pre order it now for 50 quid, and use the RC till it comes out. you get it lik half price, and you get to start using it straight away, win win!

P.S: RC is basically finished now anyway, anything they tweak will come to you in an update so you don't miss anything.

I'm about to upgrade to Windows 7. I downloaded the beta several weeks ago but never got round to installing it.

Anything I should know before upgrading?

Windows 7 still called as Vista R2 or "should-be Vista SP2" as 50% are using Vista core kernel and rest of it are new feature in Windows 7 - the reason for Windows 7 was "fix" for the problems of Vista when it was came out in 2007 with hardware problems as you can see Vista is NT6.0 and W7 is NT6.1 so I dont see any difference so I stay with Vista SP2 and wait for Windows 8 due in 2011/2012 - no point for me to upgrade to W7 if no problems in Vista SP2, I wont buy Windows 7 -- I would wait for the next one that may good one.

Don't install the Beta, you'll have to download the release candidate (build 7100 upwards). The beta expires soon, meaning that your PC will shut down every two hours. The release candidate is valid until next July though, I believe.

Like you Robert I'm tempted to grab RC now, can I use it as a full OS now then or is there any restrictions on it? I'm on Vista atm but I love the look of Win7 so I'm super tempted!

I'm sticking with Vista at least for the foreseeable future since it more than meets my needs.

If you are happy with Vista then there is no reason to switch to W7 for a while unless you want to just see what it is like.

Downloading RC now. Any dangers of losing anything on my HDD when upgrading? I don't have a spare 1tb drive to back up to.

There is always a risk.

Vista32 user here... no plans to upgrade to W7. Vista has about 80% of the good stuff covered in my opinion.

I will probably end up getting it, just because I have had every windows release since 3.1 (Im lumping all the NT's under one version :D). It helps when people ask for help with problems, at least you are familiar with it.

Funnily enough I bought Vista on release for precisely that reason - I'd make the money back doing odd jobs.

So let me get this straight. As an analogy:

Win XP = Win 98 (it was solid)
Win Vista = Win Mel Ed (wasn't as good)
Win 7 = Win 2000 (very stable)

Is that correct?

Vista = 2000
7 = XP

That would be closer to the truth. Both 2000 and Vista were showcases of new tech. 7 and XP were maintenance releases.
