Surely it depends on what type and socket the P4 was?
If it was socket 775 then it should be ok. However I seem to recall that some of the P4s were using socket 478 or 423. You really need to find out which P4 and which socket it was using before anyone can say if that motherboard will work or not.

but before you order make sure the p4 is a 775 because as smit said some p4s might have been using a different socket.

later down the line get him to buy a dual core and some more ram :P

Check the CPU support list before you buy the board. Most socket 775 boards these days do not support P4s.
 
the first p4's were released on sk423, then after year or so they moved to sk478 which stuck around for a bit.
If the old pc has pci-express and ddr2, it's most likely lga775 though.
