If only she was armed.

Yeah I mentioned it to my ex-pat cousin who lives in Florida, he called me a leftie limey.

He only moved over there 4 years ago, seems brain washing is more advanced than the gun laws.

Strangely enough, my ex-pat cousin also lives in Florida, I must say he has adopted a few odd ideas about life since moving there.

Not having lethal weapons to hand/easily accessible allows a cool off period, time for common-sense to take charge. There must be so many instances where someone shot a person in a place where weapons are easily accessed but it would have been different had the difficulty obtaining a weapon given them time to think.

The above is only one scenario where stricter gun controls could have a very positive effect.

One thing I find interesting is the amount of incidents that have occurred, where someone has just flown off the handle in a rage (like most of us will do every once in a while) but where a gun and ammunition is within close proximity, and there's nothing stopping a drastic escalation.

I'd put money on the 11 year old kid, being no different to any other 11 year old - except that he had a tantrum, and a shotgun was nearby...

Agree with the general buzz in the thread.

The kid shouldn't have had access to a gun, the parents should also have to face some charges for having such a dangerous thing accessible to an 11 year old.

People will follow the law as much as they want to and will want to exercise every written write they can. The start to changing this mentality is to introduce stricter gun laws.

I do agree that banning guns will do little at first, since it is the mentality of the individual which dictates whether he thinks he deserves to keep a gun rather than the law that tells him what he can and cant do. Eventually as obtaining guns become more difficult, you will have newer generations with a lower proportion of pro gun nuts come into voting age (due to gun culture being pushed less as it becomes more of an inconvenience to obtain one). As the years go on and the proportions of pro-gun and anti-gun shift, politicians will move their focus toward preserving the happiness of the anti gun voters rather than the pro-gun voters.

You cant change it overnight and tbh you don't need to. Saying its impossible or unlikely to make a difference is not a valid argument to dismiss the idea of banning guns to eventually obtain a safer country. If you cant change the minds of the current generation, pave the way for the next generation.

This

It takes a split second to make a stupid decision and the consequences were just half a squeeze away. Take the gun away and the kid would have just been a bratty bully rather than a murderer.

The whole 'right to bear arms' nonsense needs to go the way of the Dodo. Wake up, America! Guns should only be sold to and be used by select professionals, the police and the armed forces.

Civilians DO NOT need firearms.

One question is did he mean to shoot her, or was it he was angry and was pretending out of his window without realising or thinking the gun was loaded

The big problem is, guns are known to be an everyday household solution to an issue in the USA. Even for children.

In the UK for example, guns are not a solution so if you don't like someone you either have to plot an elaborate and more personal way of dealing with them, or as a kid you typically give them a dead arm and be done with it.

I know several adults with mental health issues that with guns available over the counter or in the home, would have either used them on themselves (most likely) or on a whole string of people that have in their words wronged them. As it happens they have had to simply live with it (life) rather disgruntled and attend CBT.

Where guns are culturally part of the solution, they are used as such; quite simply because it is a cultural and social norm. Even if that solution results in an unacceptable outcome.
