Running games on my CRT PC monitor is a similar situation. A game at 1280*1024 looks miles better than the same game at 640*480.

Well again the viewing distance is so small with a monitor you'll easily pick up on resolution differences. Sitting at a normal distance from a TV in a living room or something you're much less likely to notice differences in resolution.
