If you get booted direct to voicemail, do you assume the caller is busy on the line?

I'll be on one line or another and somebody will obviously get booted direct to voicemail due to there being a call in progress so then they immediately call the other line, no, that's just fine, I'll answer it with my other ear

It's bizarre behaviour right? Or am I the nutter? I find it even worse when they leave a voicemail on the engaged line first and then still call the other, erm... why leave a voicemail and then call me again immediately? That's just odd surely?

Am I going nuts or does this happen to others too?

Just because it goes straight to voicemail doesn't mean your phone is engaged. It could be off.

Some people feel compelled to leave a message regardless of the circumstances when confronted with the answer phone. It's just natural. Plus, the calling you back could be an afterthought.

Am I going nuts

Yes :D

I call screen sometimes. People do it to me too, I'm sure. As long as you get through to voicemail then fine. Just leave your message and await reply. Or you could just send a txt to the person as these can't be screened. ;)
