If you have a sound card do you need on board sound?

If you have a sound card do you use the motherboard sound?
No, but you will struggle to find a motherboard that does not include onboard sound

well depends on th sound card really.... cos well if ya want EAX i dont think any onboard supports it.... what ya think.... my audigy2 or the onboard of my P5E?

If it's a good mobo, the sound will most likely be good too.

I've never used a sound card for years, no need.

As said, it would be best to disable onboard sound if you want to use a sound card.

I've only had one pc where the sound card was actually better than the on board.

You must have owned some good motherboards then as I recently upgraded from on-board to an Asus Xonar DX. Difference is like night and day.

As to the original question. You should be able to disable the on-board sound through the bios settings. Make sure the correct drivers are then doing used by the card in the audio settings.
