Hey guys!

I had a quick (ish) query. Essentially something appears to have gone wrong with my PC. When I start it up now the bios comes across all ‘scrambled’ text out of place and the little green logo blurry. Needless to say it doesn’t get into windows, gets through the bios then the screen fills with lots of forward slashes ‘/’ and the occasional 0 or 1.

Havn’t made any changes to the hardware in 2 years, only thing Iv installed recently is a program called winkawaks for emulating an incredible game called puzzle fighter!

I know it’s a bit of a vague one, would love to post pics but I don’t have a digital camera.

Mike

Oh in the box:

Gigabyte GA-k8-NXP-9
Athlon 3700+
2 gig corsair DDR – forget the model
ATI x800 something (it was top of the range when I bought it, can find out if necessary)

Right, what i suggest you do is take the battery off the motherboard and leave it powered off for 5mins. Then replace the battery and power in. This will reset the CMOS which in effect, turns all the bios settings to their default value. This is an excellent method of fixing many many BIOS problems. However, you MAY need to download the NForce drivers for your motherboard again but these can be found at the nvidia website:

http://www.nvidia.com/content/drivers/drivers.asp

I would also advise that you remove and reseat your memory - are you getting any beeping sounds when you power on?

cheers

Or you can put a screwdriver over the two pins next to the battery for 5 seconds. Then take the battery out for 5 minutes if that doesn't work.

I have taken the PC to bits and put it back together again and doesnt seem to make any difference......well its a bit quieter but thats because i scraped off the layer of dust!

Doesnt make any beeping noise but then agan I dont recall hooking up a case speaker to the mobo!......might have to look into this one.

Is there anything I should bear in mind when removing the BIOS battery? Pair of tweezers do it?

Thanks for the help!

just get a small flat head scredriver and pop it out - very easy to do - jsut dont catch anything!

Its the flat battery that you will see - its just seated somewhere on the mobo

hope you get it sorted!

Hehe so do !! Thanks mate - finish work in a bit, if i dont post again this weekend youll know it didnt work and im sobbing into my keyboard!

Mike

Spot the battery here.

You just push the tag over, and the pop out. Can be awkward.

Also note clear CMOS pins on the edge of the board.

There are only 2pins for the Clear CMOS jumper. Short both of these pins will clear the CMOS setting.

Dual BIOS technology is one of the Gigabyte famous board’s features. One is main BIOS while the other one is the backup BIOS. The main function of this Dual BIOS is to back up the BIOS. I like this Dual BIOS feature very much because it is one of the necessary features for an overclocker since flashing different BIOS to gain better overclocking result is one of their frequent activities. Both of these BIOS are located below the CPU socket.

Compliments of here.

Right i forgot about my housemate's laptop, essentially I have run through all of the above, restarted the pc and now I just get a CMOS checksum error - defaults loaded message.....which i can only assume is a good thing?

Anyway the bios screen still looks.....well screwed is the only way to put it. Usually up the top right it has a Dual BIOS DPS dual power system logo in green, it looks as though someone has simply taken the logo and shifted it to the left so that its superimposed over middle of the screen.....

Any ideas?
