If your head was cut off

It's rumored that people in the old days used to feel their own head hit the basket ;)

...though how the rumor spread is beyond me ;)

Your blood pressure would drop instantly and you would pass out - death in 1 - 2 seconds.

There are recorded instances of people opening their eyes several seconds after, but this is probably just a reflex action.

What (admitadly limited) research that has been done in to it suggests you can remain responsive for anything upto and over a minute.

Jokester

What would happen if they hooked your head up to a blood machine and stuck the pipes in the relevant holes?

Death is when brain activity ceases. You would still be aware fun till you went unconscious, I would say 10's of seconds. Depends how good you are, Some divers can hold there breath for over 5mins.

Although the pain from your neck nerves might make you pass out almost instantly.

As soon as your head was severed, 2-3 seconds before you went unconcious. A few minutes until all brain activity ceased though. Any movement from the face or eyes would be reflex only.

I remember reading a daft Christmas book, I think it was "Does anything eat wasps?"

It said that there were accounts of people being executed and responding to there name being shouted a while after decapitation.

I think it said a minute or two, I remember being shocked at the length of time and the fact someone would try such a gruesome experiment.

Years ago I read about a French scientist who was sentanced to death by guillotine he asked his assistant to count how many times he blinked after his head came off, it said he blinked 7 times!

No idea if it's true however...
