There are always threads on here asking for GPU recommendations (yes, one or two from me...). How about a run-down of common monitor resolutions and the "best" (value for money in this instance) GPU for that monitor for modern games (think Oblivion or similar).

So - which is the best for:
1024x768
1280x1024
1440x900
1680x1050
1920x1200

1024x768 - 8800GTS 320MB
1280x1024 - 8800GTS 320MB
1440x900 - 8800GTS 320MB
1680x1050 - 8800GTS 640MB
1920x1200 - 8800GTS 640MB or 8800GTX

I reckon this is good.....but would probably say GTX for 1680 x 1050 :)

Have just changed from my trusty x1900xt 512MB to a GTX and - in Oblivion - it is simply stunning.....the xt was pretty damn fine, but the GTX has all the sliders set to max and is completely, totally and without doubt smooth-as-you-like :D

Funny...

I was expecting something more like..
1024x768 - 1950Pro 256mb
1280x1024 - 1950Pro 256mb
1440x900 - 1950pro 256mb
1680x1050 - 8800GTS 320mb
1920x1200 - 8800GTX

Yep - the 8800GTSs is a bargain but it's still £100 ish more than a 1950pro and is it needed to play Oblivion like games at low resolutions?

Hmm, don't agree there. I am running 1680x1050 on a 320MB GTS, and all my games (oblivion for example) looks amazing. I run Supreme COmmander in dual monitor (both 1680) and plays perfect.

This is of course with all settings max, AFx16 and 2X AA, HDR enabled if possible in the game.

Opinions here could be subjective, largely dependant on the need for Vsync

i.e. you could easily max stuff out with x card but this may be significantly inhibited by applying Vsync

Personally, I hate tearing so Vsync is always on and this is a performance hit that only the G80 can deal with anything that is thrown at it

(edit: this is at 1680*1050 btw)
