If your pay doesn't clear when it should

To be fair, in my experience direct debits for various bills etc aren't usually the problem when it comes to situations arising from delayed pay,it tends to be large rent/mortgage payments due on the first of the month, when you are paid on the last day, which can't be covered by casual funds lying around.

I dont see why an employer has to pay your bank charges. You should manage your finances better so this does not happen.

It happened to me once (well, the whole factory)
My employer reimbursed anyone who had incurred charges.Thought it was standard practise actually!

because it's... their fault that you were charged, they didn't pay you on the contracted day, therefore any charges resulting from this are their fault. As was said, people could move surplus money into a savings account, or they could genuinely be stuck and HAVE to spend all the money in their account (it does happen).

I forgot about a bank holiday on a friday last year, and paid all of our staff the following monday. And of course, we paid all relevant bank charges

Happened to me last year due a problem with Bacs file submission or something like that, pay run was 48 hours delayed. Company offered to compensate anyone affected, though I wasn't personally.
